Dolphin Emulator is an Android application that is designed to emulate Wii and GameCube games.

Dolphin Emulator was a very ambitious project that began long ago with the goal of emulating GameCube games on PC. It then slowly began to support Wii games. As the platform has been perfected, an Android version was recently released. Amazingly, the application actually does emulate Wii and GameCube games (but first you'll need to find a place to get the game images!).

However, the performance can vary depending on what specific game you're playing. Generally, GameCube games perform well. However, it's very demanding on hardware resources, and older devices will not be able to use it. Make sure your phone is plugged in before using this, or you'll be disappointed in your battery life. Wii games have less of a chance of working. Even though it's a port of a fairly stable emulator, it has trouble even with some less demanding games.

Dolphin does publish a list of supported and unsupported games, but the performance highly varies by device, especially when it comes to Android devices. If you can get it to work, it's an amazing experience. It supports Bluetooth controllers, which are highly recommended. Otherwise, it's almost impossible to play (think of how tightly packed modern controls would have to be on your small phone screen). If you have the right setup, Dolphin Emulator is a fantastic choice.

Pros:

  • Plays some games almost flawlessly
  • Is a completely free alternative to paid phone games
  • Has support for external controllers
  • Published list of supported games

Cons:

  • Compatibility varies by device
  • Is a huge drain on battery life
  • Can be unstable and very laggy if hardware is old

The September 2022 update adds support for SD card folders, the GameCube Broadband Adapter, the NFS file format, and more!
